We have implemented an aquatic program in our Physical Therapy Department with the installation of a therapeutic pool, located in the Physical Therapy Gym. We have found that aquatic therapy is an appropriate alternative medium to traditional treatment techniques for the neurologically impaired patients because of the unique properties of water. They include buoyancy, neutral warmth, fluid resistance, hydrostatic pressure and specific gravity. The benefits include increased endurance to therapy, constant sensory input, and decrease the need for client compensation. The intensity of the therapy offered by our physical therapy department is much greater than what is found in outpatient rehabilitation facilities. After in-depth evaluation, an individual therapy plan is developed to address each client’s specific needs. Our PT staff takes great pride in taking a functional approach to therapy and helping clients achieve lost skills.
