The Impact of Exercise on Cognitive Rehabilitation

Can specific exercise programs benefit those with brain injury?
When people exercise, can they rejuvenate their minds as well as their bodies?

Multiple studies are being done at TLC in concert with the University of Texas Medical Branch to answer these questions.

Focus::
Research the effectiveness of specific exercise programs for those with acquired brain injury.

Summary: :
The outcomes being measured include the overall cardio-respiratory capacity of the individual and over- ground walking ability. Research is underway examining optimal aerobic training programs in those clients who are able to walk independently. Other research underway examines the role of body weight supported treadmill walking in individuals who are unable to walk independently.

Studies feature two sets of patients with traumatic brain injury. The first includes those with cognitive difficulties but few physical problems. These patients participate in such exercises as walking and running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bicycle. For the second group of patients, who have significant physical and mental impairments, therapists encourage and help them to move their legs on a treadmill, using special equipment to support their body weight as needed. These studies will be the first controlled trials ever conducted to determine how exercise might aid cognitive rehabilitation.

Project Update as of October 2006:

The pilot project has been completed and submitted to the National Institutes of Health as a demonstration project. The NIH has responded with the award of an R01 grant that will enable funding for the full study. This study will last 4 years and involve 30 participants in both the experimental and control groups. UTMB and TLC are very excited about the opportunity to conduct this groundbreaking research.
