Therapeutic Recreation (TR)Brain injury presents unique problems for individuals in the area of leisure activity. Often, persons with brain injury experience isolation and a sense of loss. The Therapeutic Recreation Department at TLC works with clients to achieve a healthy leisure lifestyle using safe, productive ways to spend their time in order to make life more fulfilling and rewarding. Clients are assisted with structuring their leisure time in order to maintain or improve their quality of life.
New activities are learned and old activities are re-evaluated to determine the need for assistance and/or adaptive equipment. Clients are seen in a community setting on a weekly basis, where their money management skills, social interactions, cognitive functioning, initiation and functional ability to travel safely in the community can be assessed in the context of leisure activity. Aquatic therapy is utilized weekly and offers clients an opportunity to recreate in a group setting while at the same time they are addressing therapeutic activities such as stretching, mobility, range of motion, socialization and endurance. The TR department works closely, often co-treating, with all the clinical departments in implementing strategies developed from Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Neuropsychology in order to facilitate the best outcomes for brain injured clients. Formal therapy goals are established for weekend and evening hours allowing the clients to carry out these formal strategies in a more unstructured setting.
